Das vorliegende Buch, das in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Christo und Jeanne-Claude entstand, ist die erste Publikation seit fast vierzig Jahren, die sich umfassend mit dem Frühwerk der Künstler beschäftigt. Zahlreiche, bisher unveröffentlichte Arbeiten und Fotos aus dem Privatarchiv der Künstler illustrieren den Weg von Christos Flucht aus Bulgarien und seiner Ankunft in Paris 1958 bis hin zu Christo und Jeanne-Claudes Umzug nach New York 1964.

Neben einem einführenden Text von Matthias Koddenberg, Kunsthistoriker und langjähriger Freund von Christo und Jeanne-Claude, enthält das Buch ein ausführliches Interview mit den Künstlern sowie eine detaillierte Chronologie der Jahre 1935-64.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude – those names stand for works of art of monumental proportions, for massive, though temporary encroachments on our environment. What now fascinates millions of people all over the world, and angers just as many just as much, had its beginnings in Paris at the end of the fifties.

The present book, put together in close cooperation with Christo und Jeanne-Claude, is the first publication in almost forty years to deal in depth with the early work of the artists. Many previously unpublished works and photos from the artists' private archives illustrate the road from Christo's flight from Bulgaria and his arrival in Paris in 1958 to his and Jeanne Claude's move to New York in 1964.

Along with an introductory text by Matthias Koddenberg, art historian and friend of Christo and Jeanne-Claude for many years, the book contains an extensive interview with the artists and a detailed chronology for the years 1935 to 1964.
