Danuta Karsten (*1963) creates monumental and delicate installations on a large architectural scale that usually only exist for a short time. This publication documents her latest installation in St George's Church in Wismar, a building over 730 years old.
Drawing inspiration from the natural phenomenon of the glowing sea, Karsten has created an aesthetically pleasing work of art made from recycled materials and phosphorescent elements that also makes us think about sustainability and the protection of our environment.
The installation changes with the incident daylight and invites visitors to rediscover the church, considered a masterpiece of Brick Gothic architecture, time and time again. This interaction between space and light also highlights the fragility of nature — a subject that is more relevant than ever in light of the current global ecological challenges.
