The title of this publication is a deliberate reference to the widespread aspiration of living in the home of one’s dreams, a watchword used in modern marketing speak that is suggestive of wealth and luxury. Yet for most people the reality looks very different. This catalog showcases selected works from five artistic positions to explore the issue of precarious housing conditions, a highly relevant topic, given that finding a place to live has become ever more difficult and problematic in recent years.

This publication highlights two extremes: the dream of living in a “beautiful” apartment or vacation home, and the nightmare of a perilous existence without any protection and security. The issue of housing is intimately tied up with a sense of longing, nostalgia, illusion, and despair, while also raising the controversial question of whether humans alone should have access to space.

The artists included in this volume are primarily interested in urban spaces. At times, they go so far as to develop an architecture of the imagination, which they use to shed light on reality in a manner that is both striking and playful, but also critical and perceptive throughout.

Artists: Hörner/Antlfinger, Ulrike Kessl, Neringa Naujokaite, Driss Ouadahi, Veronika Peddinghaus
