Born in Bad Langensalza in 1966, Jan Stieding began his studies at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden in 1990 and then moved to the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Here he studied first in the class of Hubert Kiecol and then with Jörg Immendorff, who appointed him his master student a short time later.

The catalog is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at the Museum Ratingen (31.03.-30.07.2023) and presents about 40 works, including paintings, works on paper and material compositions. On display is thus a condensed overview of the complex work of the artist, who negotiates both social and individual themes in his works. The distanced and quiet observation of the painter as well as the research in his own archive seem to be a constantly new drive for Stieding's art.

The processing of private photographic originals, images from magazines and chance finds from the net forms a constant. As an archive and collection of material, the material accompanies the production of images. The everyday, the seen, the petit-bourgeois, things that promise honesty, security, but also homesickness and memory, thus become the source for Jan Stieding's painting.
